University Makes Contingency Plans should Corona Situation Escalate

As the Netherlands confirmed its first coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, and the number of countries affected rises, Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences has sought to reassure and support its students and staff who represent well over 100 nationalities, while at the same time making contingency plans should the situation escalate.

Wittenborg’s chair of the executive board, Peter Birdsall, has released a statement saying that the institution is keeping a close eye on developments but taking measurements so that no studies will be delayed. Meanwhile, the Dutch government has opened a helpline, 0800 1351, for people seeking assistance and to answer questions relating to the virus.

Birdsall has acknowledged that many international students and staff at Wittenborg might be worried about loved ones back home or about each other, and he stressed the importance of “supporting and respecting each other”. “Let us be shining examples of good global citizens and give our support where needed.”

In the coming days the university will give regular updates on its own policy and follow the recommendations of the Dutch Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), and keep an eye on comparable institutes abroad.

Universities around the world are currently bracing themselves for the effect of the coronavirus on their activities. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet declared the outbreak of the virus a pandemic (worldwide epidemic); however, this may happen soon.
