Less International Students to England

Stricter immigration laws, which have to make sure fewer students from outside the European Union will come to England to study, will cost the British government 2.4 billion Pounds in the coming four years. This number is derived from research into the effects of the British immigration policy.

The end of last year, Minister Theresa May announced she wanted to push back immigration from 196,000 immigrants in 2009 to ‘tens of thousands’ in the coming years. Two thirds of the immigrants enter England through a student visa. Research shows that as a result of the change in policy, 260,000 students less will come to England from the present until 2016.

Because of the decrease in income from tuition fees, visa fees, and the economic income foreign students bring, the British treasury will miss out on about 2.4 billion Pounds in the coming four years, the Ministry estimates.
