Visit to Johan Cruijff Arena Gives Wittenborg a Taste of its Glory

The Netherlands is one of the most distinctive football nations in the world and recently students from Wittenborg Amsterdam got a taste of that glory when they visited the Johan Cruijff Arena, home of Dutch football club AFC Ajax.

The double-degree students got a tour of the stadium, walked the tunnel to the beat of the Ajax march, and even visited the club's changing room and the sky boxes. They were led by Wittenborg's Head of the School of Education, Bert Meeuwsen, and Clare Millington from the University of Brighton's Business School. Students doing the IBA in Entrepreneurship & Small Business in Amsterdam can also follow the BSc double-degree pathway in Business & Management, which is offered jointly by Wittenborg and the University of Brighton.

The visit was part of a lesson on smart cities and smart stadiums, said Meeuwsen, who is also a senior lecturer at Wittenborg tasked with, among others, the module "Operational and Systems Management". He said one of the smart things at the stadium is how they use special lights for treating the grass.

The group got a tour of about an hour, accompanied by a tour guide. One of the students, Andrii Chaban from Ukraine, said he was impressed, although he is not a huge football fan nor does he support a particular team. "I just enjoy a good game. This is a really nice stadium."
