Nicoleta Salaru, Front Office & Housing Coordinator at Wittenborg, recently took part in an Erasmus+ Staff Training Week on Emotional Intelligence in Timișoara, Romania. The programme brought together ten professional staff members from higher education institutions across Europe to explore how emotional intelligence can support personal development, teamwork and a positive workplace environment.
Understanding Emotions at Work
The training focused on developing key skills including self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, teamwork and resilience. Participants explored how recognising emotions, understanding personal responses and improving communication can contribute to more effective collaboration in the workplace.
Salaru said the experience provided insights into the importance of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in professional settings.
“This self-awareness is crucial for managing behaviours and attitudes, and for understanding how one’s emotions can affect others.”
The programme also encouraged participants to reflect on how they respond to different situations.
“While we cannot always control the circumstances around us, we can choose how we respond to them.”
Sharing Experiences Across Europe
A key part of the training was the opportunity to connect with professional staff members from different higher education institutions and exchange experiences.
Salaru said meeting colleagues from different countries highlighted the similarities between institutions, regardless of their size.
“I met many wonderful and interesting people who shared their experiences at their institutions. What was truly eye-opening for me is that, regardless of how big or small an institution is, we all face very similar challenges.”
She added that the discussions reinforced the importance of personal awareness and taking responsibility for positive change.
“The key is to start by being mindful and working on yourself first, only then can you genuinely contribute and have a positive impact on the people around you.”
Discovering Timișoara
Alongside the training sessions, Salaru enjoyed exploring the history and culture of Timișoara.
“I enjoyed discovering the history of Timișoara and exploring the beautiful city with many different buildings.”
Salaru’s participation follows other recent Erasmus+ staff mobility experiences at Wittenborg, including training undertaken by colleagues such as Amal Abi Orm and Emmah Muchoki.
