The Midwinter Marathon – A Winter Classic

The midwinter marathon, held annually in Apeldoorn, has become an annual sporting event for Wittenborg staff and students since 2015. Wittenborg invites all students and staff to participate, either as runners or by cheering on your peers.

Did you know that the oldest existing running event in the Netherlands can be found in Apeldoorn? The Midwinter Marathon is unique in the Netherlands because of the fantastic course through Apeldoorn and the Veluwe. This running competition has been held annually in Apeldoorn since 1974 and attracts thousands of people every year. Everyone can enjoy the event, whether you participate or just come to watch!

The course in and around Apeldoorn is known as one of the most challenging and unique races in the Netherlands. The start point and finish line are on the Loolaan, a grand street known for its historic buildings that runs all the way from the city centre to the park of the royal palace Het Loo. The route of the marathon takes you through the beautiful surroundings of Apeldoorn, Hoog Soeren and Assel. As the area is in many places hilly and wooded, it is often covered in a thick layer of snow when the marathon is taking place. What better way to get into the winter spirit?

The marathon has become an annual sporting event for Wittenborg staff and students since 2015, expanding WUAS’s development of sporting activities. Staff have had the upper hand in participating in the event compared to students so far, and the younger Wittenborgers were shown how it’s done in previous competitions.

Join the Fun!

As a previous Wittenborg runner has put it: “It is a must-do if you live or study in Apeldoorn. Something extraordinary to remember your time in the city. You feel very fit and energetic afterwards and you meet lots of really nice people at the event.”
Are you excited and interested in taking part? Wittenborg invites all students and staff to participate, either as runners or by cheering on your peers. Registration for the 48th edition on February 4, 5, and 6 is open. You can register until January 9, 2022 here.
