Wittenborg Students Join Sinterklaas Fun in Apeldoorn

Wittenborg Students Get a Taste of Dutch Culture through Sinterklaas Volunteering

On 18 November, Wittenborg students volunteered to assist in preparing for the arrival of Sinterklaas in Apeldoorn. Alexandra Kukhtina, an IBA student at Wittenborg, shared her positive experience participating in the event organised by Gemeente Apeldoorn, where the students' enthusiastic involvement added a vibrant touch to the preparations.

Alexandra highlighted how volunteering is her way of giving back to the community where she lives, studies and works, emphasising the significance of contributing to a Dutch tradition to better understand the culture.

On the day, volunteers were actively involved in preparing 'Pieten' van Sinterklaas, applying make-up and styling hair. Groups were formed, with Kukhtina taking charge of the "horse racing" activity. Wooden horses were provided to kids who raced against each other, 'Pieten' or fellow volunteers.

The event drew an impressive crowd. Reflecting on the experience, Kukhtina shared that she "felt being a part of something big and significant for Apeldoorn citizens."

The day also provided networking opportunities for Kukhtina as she connected with three fellow Wittenborg students. They exchanged opinions on their acquired experiences and exchanged contact information.

As a token of appreciation, each volunteer received a small present. They also had the chance to chat with the event organisers, who expressed the possibility of future volunteering or working opportunities and assured them of being contacted if such opportunities should arise.

"I made an effort to practise my Dutch, engage with children, interact with the 'Pieten,' other volunteers and organisers to gain a deeper understanding of Dutch culture. I even had a typical Dutch lunch: Boerenkool," she explained further.

Sophia Faraji, Wittenborg's External Relations & Events Manager, coordinated volunteers for the event. Echoing Alexandra's sentiments, she emphasised, "Volunteering at Sinterklaas can offer students a chance to immerse themselves in Dutch traditions and culture. Through active participation in Sinterklaas-related activities, students can acquire first-hand experience in the customs and rituals associated with the holiday."
