Hogeschool Wittenborg Hero Rudi Groenink takes initiative to rescue residents from a burning building in the neighborhood.

Monday 22 March 2010 - At 10:30 am this morning fire was signaled in one of the old Dutch houses on the New Market Square opposite Wittenborg business school, and school caretaker Rudi Groenink, together with the building facilities coordinator Barry Westervoorde were first on the scene and assisted people in evacuated the building and adjacent houses. Rudi immediately entered the burning building and evacuated two people before the heat and fire drove him back. "I just pushed my way in - the heat at the top of the building was intense"

Rudi Groenink is the Business School’s qualified medic and emergency coordinator. It is feared that one of the victims on the top floor had no chance to escape, and perished. The investigation is expected to last all day.
